Passport validity required of Turkey visa applicants

According to Article 7.1b of the "Law on Foreigners and International Protection" No. 6458, guests and travelers wishing to enter Turkey must carry a travel document (passport) with a validity date of at least 60 days "other than the duration of stay granted under both the Turkish e-Visa, visa exemption, or even for holders of a residence permit (temporary residence).

As an example to explain the validity period of the passport to enter Turkey: 

To enter Turkey with a 60-day visa "length of stay", foreigners must hold a travel document (passport) valid for at least 60 additional days and therefore the total days required to be available with the travel document reaches 120 days (60 days + 60 days) of validity from the time of entry Turkey.

In accordance with international conventions and legal provisions, the following cases are excluded from this article:

  • Citizens of countries allowed to enter Turkish territory using their national identity card in accordance with the "European Convention on Regulations Governing the Movement of Persons between the Member States of the Council of the European Union"

Tips and general information before applying for a Turkey visa

- All guests and travelers wishing to come to Turkey, and those wishing to obtain a Turkey visa, who are not exempted from visa, are required to apply for a Turkey visa to obtain a specific appointment by the Turkish consulates or offices approved by Turkish consulates, through the pre-application system for Turkey visa (www.visa.gov.tr).

- The fees payable for the application for a Turkish visa are non-refundable in cases of rejected applications.

- It is not possible to exceed the period of stay in Turkey and recorded in the visa, and also for those exempted from the visa, they are entitled to stay for 90 days every 180 days, as this decision is binding on the 90-day period only for all travelers and foreign guests who arrived to Turkey.

- Foreign travelers and guests with two different nationalities and two passports cannot stay in Turkey for 90 days, each with two different passports during the last 180 days, and if you want to renew the 90 days, the guest must leave the Turkish state, in order not to get a violation while leaving the country, which may reach the point of temporarily preventing the entry of travel to Turkey.

- The Turkish Embassy Office is allowed to issue visas for a period not exceeding 90 days, and for foreign visitors wishing to reside in Turkey for a period of more than 90 days, apply for one of the types of residence available in Turkey, the easiest of which is to apply for a "short-term residence permit" by visiting the local Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners Affairs.

-The short-term residence permit in Turkey is canceled for foreigners if they stayed outside Turkey for a total period of time exceeding 120 days during the last year.

- Holders of United Nations (UN) travel documents (the passage document) who have a blue passage document from the United Nations may receive a 90-day visa exemption for stay during the aforementioned 180 days during their visit to Turkey, provided that they can present an endorsement of their official mission in the country. Holders of UN red travel documents are also exempted from entry visas to Turkey and can stay in Turkey for 90 days during the previous 180 days, regardless of the reason for the visit. The general visa provisions and rules also apply to holders of UN blue travel documents in accordance with the regulations specified in their country of origin.

- All visa applications of all kinds of tourism and for the purpose of trade (work, study, etc.) are applied for through representatives of the Turkish Embassy office abroad.

- Apart from the visa system adopted in any foreign country, citizens of these countries and holders of passports need to obtain a visa from the Turkish embassy office in advance.

- Foreign students who have received invitations from universities and institutes affiliated to the Turkish Council of the Ministry of Higher Education to study at all levels, including scholarships, universities students , graduates, graduate and doctoral students, international students affiliated with the International Student Exchange Program (Erasmus), students of cultural programs, as well as those who join education and youth programs in the European Union, there is a decision to allow the processing of their residence permit applications when they enter Turkey benefiting from the visa exemption system without the need to obtain a student visa from by the application to the Directorate of Immigration and Aliens of the regionwhere they reside.

Visitors coming through seaports and wishing to enter Turkey for tourist purposes, can apply for a visa entry permit by the governor of the region coming to it, and the duration of this permit does not exceed 72 hours from the time of obtaining the permit, and the validity of this permit does not exceed visiting tourist attractions adjacent to the sea port coming from it and the surrounding areas, the ministry aims to facilitate the entry of visitors coming to Turkey and subject to the permit law,  Turkey also does not grant these visitors the right to apply for residence or a visa other than the permit granted to them, the border authorities do not seize the passports of visitors coming through seaports, but in return they grant "visitors" a special Harbor City entry permit  so that the visitor must return it to the border authority during their exit from the country.

The Turkish state can process any part of the information provided to it and store it in a database, and the Turkish authorities can access the information related to each state.

Tourist Visa

- In the event that there is an invitation letter for the purpose of tourist visa, the letter must include the TR ID number of the invited person, provided that the identity is clearly added, in addition to the list of invitees, the contact number, the duration and purpose of the stay, and it is preferable that there is a kinship between the inviter and the invitee and it is mentioned in the text in the invitation letter. In the event that the invitation letter is addressed by a company or organization, the certificate of the vergi lavhasi of the inviting institution must be included in the invitation letter, and the inviting person / institution must undertake to cover the entire expenses of the invitee during his stay and take responsibility for his presence on Turkish territory, and it also requires that the applicant be able to receive a regular and sufficient salary for alimony during the period of stay.

Work Visa

  • Through the accredited Turkish consular offices spread in the countries of the world, foreigners can submit their applications in order to obtain a work permit directly in their country of residence. In order to work in Turkey.

  • you need to apply at the nearest approved office to obtain a work permit and then a work visa, the documents required from the applicant for work are as follows: a valid passport, a work visa application form, and an invitation letter from the owner of the institution invited to work in it. The employer responsible for your application is required to submit other documents to be submitted to the Turkish Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MLSS) within a period of ten working days after you submit the application. 

  • The results of applying for work permits are issued through the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, positively or negatively, and the Turkish work residence permits are equivalent to residence permits, and therefore if the applicant obtains a work permit by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the entry visa fees are imposed on him as a foreigner and the work residence card fees, and these fees are collected by the Turkish consulate offices. Since the permit obtained is addressed to the name of a work residence and obtained from one of the accredited consular offices, this allows him to enter Turkey for a maximum of 90 days.

  • You can find the list of documents required to apply on the website of the Turkish Ministry of Labor and Social Security through its website (http://www.csgb.gov.tr), the results of the applicants are issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security within thirty days from the date of submission at the latest. 

  • Immediately after your arrival in Turkey and before starting work, within one month from the date of arrival, you must register at a near a local police station in the area where you reside in order to obtain the necessary work residence permit.

  • For foreigners who will work in the free zone in Turkey, they receive a residence permit by the Ministry of Economy, while for foreigners who work within units of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, they get their permits, each according to the ministry to which it belongs, also for employees seconded to work in universities and educational institutions, the permits are issued by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Training Visa / Work Permit Exemptio

  • Applicants for a work permit of the type of "training" are exempted from the work permit, and the exemption is issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security in accordance with Law No. (4817) for requests for special training outside the provisions stipulated in Article (55) "Exemption of work permit" from the law enforcement regulations related to work permits for foreigners.

  • Article (55) of the Regulation of the Law on Work Permits for Foreigners defined by No. (4817), which regulates the subject of exemption for work permits for training, and determines the period of time associated with the permit, during which the foreigner is exempted from the work permit, it has several types that applicants must be within one of them to be exempted from the work permit, as follows:

  1. The laws and provisions stipulated shall not conflict with other laws and provided that the foreigner and the employer fulfill their obligations towards these laws. 

  2. Applicants exempted from work visas under agreements signed by theTurkish state in the form of bilateral agreements or multilateral agreements.

  3. Foreign applicants wishing to come to Turkey for the purpose of carrying out sports activities for a minimum of four months, foreigners who have permanent residence in other countries and have the desire to come to visit Turkey on time for the purpose of educational attainment and cultural and artistic activities for a period not exceeding one month from the date of entry.

  4. Foreign applicants for the purpose of providing training courses on the use of imported equipment or for the transport of defective mechanisms from Turkey, and applicants for the purpose of carrying out maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment that are imported from outside Turkey, as well as applicants for the purpose of training on products and services that are exported from Turkey or that are imported to Turkey, provided that the period of residence is a maximum of 3 months within a period of one year from the date of entry into Turkish territory, where this condition must be met with the documents to be presented.

  5. Applicants from the category of artists or practitioners of arts in their forms of exhibitions and circuses, which carry out their activities outside the boundaries of the approved Ministry of Tourism, provided that the period does not exceed six months from the date of entry into Turkish territory andthis condition must be met with the documents they will submit.

  6. Collaborators with universities and educational institutions and arrivals with the aim of enhancing their knowledge and enriching their scientific and ethical culture, provided that it does not exceed a period of two years and that it is limited to the period allocated for study, so that this condition must be achieved by adding proof with the documents they will provide.

  7. Applicants who have informed the Turkish government of their desire to provide important cooperative services at all levels in the social, cultural, technology and educational fields within a maximum period of six months from the date of entry into Turkish territory. 

  8. Applicants for a visit by the European Union Centre for Education and Youth Programmes (National Agency)

  9. Foreign applicants wishing to obtain training in Turkey through international training coordination must obtain approval from the Turkish Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Interior and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  10. Foreigners representing organizations affiliated with tourism companies and coming to Turkey, provided that the duration of the agreed contract does not exceed eight months.

  11. Athletes, football players and training staff, including coaches, assistants and others, who have been awarded contracts andwhose contracts have been approved by the Turkish Football Association or by the General Directorate of Youth and Sports.

  12. Applicants from foreign seafarers in accordance with the bilateral contracts and protocols signed under Article (10/ (I) of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Control for seafarers, as well as for seafarers working on board marine vessels and obtaining a "certificate of consent to conformity" from the Maritime Navigation Department and registered with the Turkish International Ship Registration Law and operating outside the coastal navigation line.

  13. Foreign experts and holders of an employment contract in projects carried out through the joint cooperation between the Turkey-EU Financial Cooperation Program are not required to have a work visa during their tenure. 

  • Article (55) stipulates those foreigners coming to Turkey are entitled to apply for residence permits of the type of "short-term temporary residence" by the Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners of the region in which the applicant resides, and for the exemption period, it is not extendable, as this exemption decision can be used only once and within a period of time not exceeding one year.  In addition, in order for the applicant to benefit from this decision, three months have passed since the expiry of the validity period obtained in the residence permit granted to foreigners, but if the foreigner wants to work for a longer period than the period of exemption obtained, he must apply for a work visa through the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

Commissioned Journalists

  • Journalists residing on Turkish territory who have a "short-term residence" permit are not required to apply for a work residence permit, also for journalists who are members of the international press and who have the desire to visit Turkey temporarily, they are not required to obtain a "press explanation visa" without obtaining an appointment in an office or permanent company in Turkey, it is sufficient to obtain a tourist visa if the foreigner is subject to the visa. In case of necessity, a press card can be issued temporarily to members of the foreign press and those coming to Turkey temporarily and for a short temporary period by the General Directorate of Press and Information under the Prime Minister's Office, and this card can be used during their stay in Turkey officially, and this card is issued for a period not exceeding three months, with the possibility of renewing it for another three months when necessary.

Tour Operator Representative Visa

Foreign applicants who work in the field of organizing tourist trips as a representative of foreign companies are exempted from work visas for a period not exceeding eight months, and applications for a work residence permit for these representatives are also processed by the local Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners in which they reside in accordance with the rules and conditions of organizing tourist visits.

Transport Visa

  • Foreign applicants for a transit visa can apply for a multiple-entry visa, which is valid for no more than one year if they are able to submit the required documents. 

  • Truck and van drivers are kindly requested to contact the nearest Turkish mission to obtain the correct information before heading to Turkey, because the visa system for international truck drivers may differ in a country from the rest of the general visa systems that apply to citizens of the same country.

Employees assigned to foreign religious institutions

Applicants and those who have a specific and official employment in foreign religious institutions in Turkey are subject to the law of "work residency" permit for foreigners in the exceptional case, where the Ministry of Internal Affairs issues applications for work permit through it so that they can practice work in the State of Turkey.

Archaeological Excavation Missions, Exploration and Visas for Documentary Purpose

  • Obtaining special permission from the Turkish government in advance for foreigners wishing to shoot documentaries, conduct research or even archaeological missions is a prerequisite for officially starting their work in the country.
